More Than 6,000 Volunteer Hours Donated By UPS Canada
Press Release

Culture of Community Involvement Strong all Year Long

MISSISSAUGA, ON, April 13, 2007 - During National Volunteer Week and throughout the year, UPS Canada employees enthusiastically roll up their brown sleeves to volunteer. UPS's success in creating a culture of volunteerism is clear with last year's results from its Global Volunteer Week program.  In 2006, over 850 Canadian employees at UPS contributed more than 6,000 hours of volunteer time -- the equivalent of 250 days -- to more than 150 charitable organizations in communities across Canada.

"Volunteering has brought me immeasurable satisfaction; I can use the skills I've gained at UPS and I feel a sense of achievement knowing I am helping to bring about social change," says UPS Canada Workforce Planning Manager, Glenda Shuffler-Lester.  "I appreciate working for a company that supports my volunteerism to enrich the community where I live and work."

A Statistics Canada survey found that employed volunteers are likely to devote more hours to their efforts if they receive support from their employers.  In fact, 25 per cent of the volunteer work completed in the year of the study was done with the support of employers*.

UPS provides employees volunteer opportunities through its annual Global Volunteer Week, an extension of the company's long-standing commitment to volunteerism.  The week-long event, in October, marks the culmination of volunteer work performed by employees throughout the year.  UPS employees in over 200 countries synchronize their efforts, donating their time to a wide range of activities including repairing schools, reading to children, assisting food banks and landscaping for community organizations.

Since 2003, UPS's community service initiative has grown from roughly 1,000 volunteers in 2003 to the more than 20,000 employees worldwide that participated last year.

In 2006, UPS Canada employees also:

  • Donated a total of $256,919 CDN in grants with funding for essential services and programs to organizations such as Easter Seals Society of Ontario, Volunteer Canada, Victorian Order of Nurses, and the Fredericton chapter of Habitat for Humanity.  In order to qualify for community investment grants, UPS employees volunteered at least 120 hours with each organization.
  • Raised over $1.2 million CDN for the United Way.
  • Raised over $78,000 CDN for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
  • Helped distribute food and other essential items to the homeless in the streets of Toronto, cooked and served hot meals to homeless youth in Montreal, and sorted gifts for children in need in Calgary.

Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen.  Whether through involvement with United Way, The UPS Foundation or volunteerism, UPS provides assistance to programs that address social and community issues including education, poverty, homelessness, hunger, illness and unemployment.

UPS, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2007, is the world's largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain services, offering an extensive range of options for synchronizing the movement of goods, information and funds.  Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.  UPS's stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange (UPS) and the company can be found on the Web at www.ups.com.
