The UPS Foundation awards a significant grant to La Maison Caméléon
Press Release

Sherbrooke (Québec), March 13, 2009 - La Maison Caméléon de l'Estrie's board of directors' chairperson, Diane Tremblay, was pleased to announce this morning that the organization received a grant for $45,890 from The UPS Foundation.

Founded in 1997, La Maison Caméléon de l'Estrie offers respite care to families who tend to a physically or mentally handicapped family member. The organization takes in the handicapped child or adult for a short period of time, from a few hours to several days. From the moment it first opened its doors, the organization knew that it would offer a much needed service, and the constant increase in the number of guests La Maison Caméléon accommodates time after time, is a clear indication of that. The organization is an indispensable resource that allows families to catch their breath and avoid exhaustion.

The UPS grant will be used to build an activity room and to purchase tables, storage cabinets and specialized equipment. The room's new layout will better accommodate wheelchairs and will include a Snoezelen therapy section. The Snoezelen method uses a variety of objects to help stimulate the senses of sight, hearing and smell as well as motor movements.

"In today's uncertain times, this is a truly generous gesture. We cannot thank The UPS Foundation enough for this great gift," said Tremblay. "We must now get to work as soon as possible to make this great project a reality."

Founded in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Ga., The UPS Foundation's major initiatives include programs that support community safety, non-profit effectiveness, economic and global literacy, environmental sustainability and diversity.  The UPS Foundation pursues these initiatives by identifying specific projects where its support can help produce a measurable social impact.

In 2008, The UPS Foundation donated $46.9 million US to charitable organizations worldwide.  These funds benefit organizations and programs such as La Maison Caméléon de l'Estrie and provide support for building stronger communities.

"UPS has a long-standing commitment to making communities around the world better by supporting charitable organizations and engaging over 400,000 employees in community service worldwide," said Ken Sternad, president of The UPS Foundation. "Together with non-profit partners such as La Maison Caméléon de l'Estrie, we work to make a positive impact on the lives of people in need."
