Volunteer Initiatives Produce $58,000 In Community Investment Grants
FREDERICTON, NB, March 22, 2007 - With spring in the air, three Fredericton-area organizations are busy renewing programs, services and suppliers thanks to UPS Canada Community Investment Grants totaling $58,000.
The three include the Victorian Order of Nurses, Minto Community Resource Centre and the Fredericton chapter of Habitat for Humanity. UPS Canada employees in New Brunswick participated in the company's Community Investment Grant Program, which allows employees or family members to submit a community grant application once they've donated 120 volunteer hours to an organization. The funds then are provided by The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS.
In Fredericton, senior citizens attend the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) Adult Day Program to improve their health and well-being. Seniors enjoy programs that involve music, art and exercise through the support of a UPS Community Investment grant totaling $17,846.
"Without contributions from companies like UPS Canada, Fredericton seniors would not be able to engage in these vital programs," said George Filliter, chairman of VON-Fredericton's board. "We are grateful to UPS for their generous support of our essential day program."
The Minto Community Resource Center received a $22,619 UPS Canada grant that will be used to install an indoor lift at their facility and to purchase a new walk-in freezer. The lift will be used to move food and clothing donations, making it easier to get the items to those in need.
"Thanks to this UPS Canada grant, we no longer have to worry about the freezer breaking down or a volunteer strenuously transporting food and clothing up and down the stairs," said Brenda Belliveau, Minto Community Resource Center coordinator. "This grant allows us to improve our service to the community."
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that mobilizes volunteers and community partners to build affordable housing. The $17,802 UPS Canada grant will be used to purchase office supplies and construction tools to assist in the building of New Brunswick homes. The construction tools consist of new ladders, wheelbarrows and small hand tools. Office supplies such as a laptop, projector and screen, printer and digital camera also will make it easier to coordinate the volunteer initiative.
"We are proud that UPS employees and their families dedicated their time and effort to these worthy organizations," says Shelley Gares, UPS Canada's vice president of Customs Brokerage. "At UPS, we understand that building strong and healthy communities comes from the ground up. We support the Minto Community Resource Centre, VON and Habitat for Humanity in their mission to help those who need it most."
