UPS Assists At-Risk Famlies With $34,000 Grant

Moncton, February 20, 2008 - Today UPS Canada awarded a $34,258 community grant to Moncton Headstart Inc., a not-for-profit organization that works to empower at-risk children, families and individuals to realize their potential and lessen the impact of poverty.

"We work with our parents to develop the skills they need to be nurturing, responsive and effective parents," said Clare Archibald, executive director of Moncton Headstart Inc.  "At the same time, the children are involved in a specialized program to develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically.  We rely heavily on volunteers to deliver these programs and this generous grant will greatly assist our efforts."

The grant will help the organization continue to provide critical community programs.  Part of the funding will actually help pay the salary of a dedicated volunteer co-ordinator.

"One of the best things we can do for a charitable organization is offer them resources that will help them grow," said Tammy Bilodeau, controller for UPS Canada.  "With the funds donated today, the volunteer co-ordinator will be in place twice as long as originally planned. That position is critical in being able to co-ordinate volunteers to deliver current programs and will also allow them to look at new programs."

Moncton Headstart Inc. offers programs for all age groups, including a teaching kitchen, an adult literacy program, a housing program and a scholarship fund for parents or former students. The grant will also be used to purchase two new stoves and a freezer for the teaching kitchen, two computers for staff members, children's books for the volunteer reading program and resources to train and recognize volunteers.

"A great part of the success of Moncton Headstart is their ability to motivate parents to contribute their time," said Bilodeau. "The families who belong to Moncton Headstart face enormous challenges every day and live without many of the things we take for granted. For this reason, we are very proud that part of this grant will help cover some transportation and childcare costs for parents who volunteer."

UPS's grant program highlights the company's philosophy of striking a balance between financial contributions and hands-on volunteer hours. Organizations are nominated for grants by UPS employees and each recipient organization must have had benefited from hands-on volunteer hours from UPS employees to qualify.
