Original Artwork Created for Courier Company's Centennial Year
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan.12, 2007 - Original artwork by painter, illustrator and muralist, Yannick Picard, from Montmagny, Quebec, will be unveiled today at UPS global headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. The 15-foot centennial mural was commissioned by UPS to commemorate 100 years of service for the world's largest package delivery company.
"Yannick was chosen because of his artistic ability to skillfully weave images, into a story, that visually captures UPS's legacy of corporate giving, volunteerism and sustainable business practices," says Sylvie Hamel, UPS manager of Identity and Design. "We are honoured that a talented Canadian artist could help UPS portray its 100 years of service into an innovative piece of art."
A graduate from the Université du Québec in Montreal, Picard is a rising Canadian artist who is quickly building an impressive portfolio of international work. His pieces include a mural for a United Nations art event in Honduras, a mural for the "Winnipeg International Mural Festival" at the Fairmount Hotel, and illustrations for Air Canada's En Route Magazine.
"I focused on the use of lines and images to create a feeling of movement in the mural. My goal was to capture the UPS centennial story by illustrating its continuous evolution since opening for business in 1907," said Picard. "I'm happy to see the completed piece, as it took me four months to create the mural from the initial sketches to the final 15 by 6 foot canvas." Picard's centennial mural for UPS captures the four pillars of the company's centennial celebration: customers, environment, community and employees in four sections within the mural. The main colour palette for the centennial mural is green to communicate growth, progression and preservation of the environment.
The UPS pillars are:
- Customers - reflects the technology tools and solutions UPS offers to customers. The vast delivery fleet, including the recognizable brown trucks, planes and ships, are also showcased.
- Environment - reflects UPS's commitment to create sustainable business practices such as fuel efficiency, waste reduction and energy conservation.
- Community - focuses on UPS's legacy of corporate philanthropy through volunteer and financial donations to causes such as literacy, hunger and volunteerism.
- Employees - illustrates the diversity of the workforce through gender, job types and ethnicity. The artwork includes images of actual UPS employees from around the world.
A representation of Canadian employee, Kim Stevenson, is included in the mural. Based out of Toronto, Kim epitomizes UPS's legacy of giving back to the community by supporting organizations and people in need of assistance. Kim, the father of two, demonstrates UPS's philosophy of giving as he has opened his home to become the guardian of two special needs adults.
